Chrome 21 Stable Release Brings Retina Support And Camera APIs

by vinayak mathur

Chrome 21 was released for the stable channel a few days back, and there are three noteworthy additions to the otherwise uneventful launch of the new version. Specifically; Chrome 21 has Retina support for the new line of MacBooks, it allows HTML5 apps to use the getUserMedia JavaScript API and connect with your webcam, and finally, it adds support for the Gamepad API. For now, this is good news for developers. Users will be able to benefit from this in the long run when there is better support in the form of online games and web apps. The Retina support is what users will get to see first hand immediately, and while it isn’t a feature (so to speak), it nevertheless means something for Mac users.

The retina display is something entirely for Mac users, but the other two features are ones that are available across desktop platforms.

About Google Chrome

To understand what the getUserMedia JavaScript API is, it would be a good idea to head over to Sketchbots, a Chrome experiment designed specifically to show off how HTML 5 can work with your webcam in Chrome and replace Flash effectively. Web developers can focus on using HTML5 and users can rest assured that a day will come when using your webcam won’t mean Flash eating away at laptop and netbook batteries.

Sketchbots

Finally, gamers in general and game developers in particular, can rejoice with the addition of support for the Gamepad API in this new version. Like Firefox 14, Chrome also has a few tricks for gamers. Apart from these three features, there are bug fixes in the new release.

What’s clear is that Chrome isn’t just a fast browser, it’s getting power too and web browsing isn’t the only area of its focus. With Firefox adding significant support for hardware, Chrome isn’t going to let it take the lead. If nothing, the new features mean HTML 5 and gaming are very important at Google and for Chrome’s future as the dominant web browser.

Hootsuite becomes more social add support for RSS

by vinayak mathur

Hootsuite is expanding its App Directory, adding support for MailChimp, Chime.in, Identi.ca, Vision Critical Surveys, and RSS Reader. The new apps are available starting Tuesday for all 4 million of HootSuite’s Free, Pro and Enterprise clients.

“Businesses today are social. Success depends on connecting with customers instantly across multiple social media channels and networks. The growth of our App Directory gives clients an impressive arsenal of tools to do this, all in a single place,” says HootSuite CEO Ryan Holmes. “Our goal, as we close in on six million users by end of year, is to continue aggressively integrating leading apps, turning our dashboard into the mother of all SaaS resources for the social business.”

Tuesday’s apps bring a number of interesting additions to the service, particularly for business users.

MailChimp: Allows you to view and search for recent campaigns, as well as share campaigns to social networks and view campaign results.

Chime.in: Chime.in integration allows you to schedule and send chines from within HootSuite, as well as view and leave comments, and preview photos and video.

Identi.ca: Identi.ca users can now post status updates, monitor their timeline and messages, view conversations, and track replies.

Vision Critical Surveys: Now you can share surveys from Vision Critical Survey’s with your social networks, and monitor results in real time.

RSS Reader: The RSS Reader app lets you view your RSS feeds within Hootsuite and easily share those stories with your social networks from your HootSuite dashboard.

“While we offer social capabilities and tracking inside our own application we know that the most important thing for small businesses is convenience,” says MailChimp Head of Integrations and Partnerships, Amy Ellis. “So many small businesses use HootSuite to manage and measure their brand’s presence on Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin and more. We’re excited that this integration will also allow them to manage the sharing of their email campaigns across those networks as well.”

HootSuite launched the App Directory enabling third-party developers to build extensions into the dashboard platform late last year. Applications currently available include Constant Contact, Digg, Flickr, Get Satisfaction, InboxQ, Orkut, TrendSpottr, Tumblr, and YouTube. HootSuite natively supports Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google+ Pages.

Google Play offers 24/7 phone support

by vinayak mathur

This is something I definitely wasn’t aware of, but I’m the type of person that doesn’t usually require phone support – and if I get to the stage where it doesn’t work on my smartphone, quick, it gets uninstalled and I go into a fit of internal rage.

But, the Google Play Store actually features 24-hour technical support over the phone. So if you have any problems with purchasing or downloading apps, movies or music, you can fill out an online form and a Google representative will call you during your requested time.

The Play Store 24-hour technical support is only for Play Store-related problems, not handset-related problems. So I’m sure they would be picky on what they would help you out on, which is fair enough. If you want to have a handy link to contact the people at Google Play, try this link. Not bad, huh?

by vinayak mathur

According to Google developer advocate Paul Kinlan, who spoke recently at the Develop conference in Liverpool. there will be plug-and-play gamepad, webcam, and microphone support in Chrome, and second, the nascent real time communication protocol WebRTC will begin to be implemented as well early next year ,features that give Chrome some considerable gaming chops when combined with its existing WebGL and HTML 5 prowess and, he says, could bring OnLive to the web without plugins. Motorola Xoom gets Android 3.1 update

by Shipra

Motorola has confirmed a timescale for the XOOM Android 3.1 upgrade, announced earlier this week at Google IO. As expected, the Verizon version of the XOOM will get the update first, with the new software rolling out this week.

As for those with WiFi-only XOOM tablets, or those with the 3G version but on carriers other than Verizon Wireless, they’ll be getting Android 3.1 “within the next several weeks.” That staggered release schedule is likely to come as something of a disappointment.

The OS will be pushed out in phases, so don’t be surprised if you don’t get it at the same time as all your XOOM-owning friends. Among the changes will be support for Android Market movie rentals, Flash Player 10.2 support, resizable widgets, USB peripheral support and boosted Bluetooth support.
