Sony To launch PS3 Image Editing Software PlayMemories This Week

by vinayak mathur

Sony’s hoping to make a stronger link between its popular camera products and the PS3 on Thursday with the Japanese release of PlayMemories Studio, a ¥1,500 (about $18) download that lets users view, edit, and share their photos and videos.

Unlike the stock viewer on the PS3, PlayMemories Studio allows users to see all of the photos and video clips already on the PS3, or on USB-connected cameras or hard disks. The content — “memories” if you prefer — can then be viewed in a timeline, on a map (if the requisite GPS info is embedded), or as part of user-generated collections. The real star of the show, though, is the video editing feature, which allows users to pan and zoom within a video and add kooky stuff like sound effects, slow motion or repeat. Once the videos are edited they can be uploaded to Facebook or Sony’s own PlayMemories Online sharing service from within the app; if you’re the mobile type, you can edit or stream those movies on your PSP or PS Vita as well (provided you have a Wi-Fi connection).

PlayMemories Studio doesn’t sound like it’s breaking too much new ground, but it could be a fun way to play around with your vacation videos (Sony says it “feels like a game”). For those who don’t feel like dropping the money on the software sight unseen, a 30-day trial version is being released, and the company’s making the app available for free for owners of 2012 and selected 2011 model Sony cameras as well. So far, we haven’t heard any details for the international release, but we’ll let you know as soon as we hear anything.

15 Web Alternatives to Popular Desktop Software

by vinayak mathur

Web applications have come a long way. They used to be amateur imitations of their desktop counterparts, with only one or two functions and not at all practical. But my, have these web apps grown. Web apps these days have become so powerful and useful that in some cases, they’ve begun to replace desktop software.

Desktop programs are great and all, but they don’t provide the same benefits as web apps that make use of cloud computing. With most web apps, you only need a browser and an internet connection to access all your data online. That beats having to install annoying programs any day. To give you a better sense of how useful web apps have become, I’ve compiled a list of web tools and apps that can very well replace some desktop programs. I hope you take the time to try them all out. You’ll be surprised how well they work.

Without further ado, here are some great web alternatives to the popular desktop programs we all love.

HuluHulu

I’m a cheap guy who spends all his time on the computer. How could I watch my favorite TV shows without leaving my computer? Well, I could purchase a TV tuner and install their lame software or I could head to Hulu.com and watch my favorite shows for free. Hulu is a website that offers streaming video of popular TV shows and movies in the US. It is ad supported, but allows you to watch your favorite shows from the comfort of your computer. Although Hulu is a U.S. only website, there are ways to access Hulu from outside the U.S.

MeeboMeebo

With Meebo, you can chat with your friends from anywhere as long as you have a browser and an internet connection. Meebo is an online tool that allows you to login to any major IM network, including AIM, MSN, GTalk, and Facebook. You don’t even need to create an account, just input your IM information and you’re ready to go. If you take the 20 seconds to set up a Meebo account, you can login to multiple accounts at once. This sure beats downloading and managing three IM programs at once, doesn’t it?

TokBox may be free, but you’re going to need your own microphone and webcam.

Moof

Replaces: iTunes

MoofMoof

You may have a huge iTunes library, but what happens when you go out and forget to bring your iPod along? Moof is the solution. Moof is another web app that streams music online, but I think of it as an iTunes alternative. You can export your entire iTunes library as an .xml file and upload that to Moof, so you can have a full backup of your music online. Where does Moof get all its music from? Youtube. Yeah, I know, it’s a little disappointing, but the quality isn’t that bad.

ESET Online Virus Scanner

Replaces: Anti-Virus Software

ESETESET

While the ESET Online Virus scanner is a great alternative to Anti-Virus programs, you shouldn’t literally replace your Anti-Virus program. Think of this tool as a backup tool, in case your Anti-Virus software malfunctions. Made by the folks that brought you NOD32, the ESET online scanner uses the same threat signatures as NOD32 and allows you to scan your computer from your browser. It may take a while, but after the scan, suspicious files will be quarantined for you to restore or permanently delete. A great tool for your security toolbox.

Replaces: BitTorrent Client

BitLetBitLet

When you don’t have access to a BitTorrent client on your computer, you can use the BitLet app to download your torrents. Meet iCloud, the future of operating systems. iCloud is a very slick web operating system that gives you access to hundreds of built in applications, including an office suite, a media player, a chat client, nifty games, and much more. You have 3 GB of free storage and can opt to buy more if needed. You can get everything you need in this web OS.

Microsoft extends support for Windows 7, Vista

by vinayak mathur

Microsoft has quietly extended support for the consumer versions of Windows 7 and Windows Vista by five years, syncing them with the lifespan of enterprise editions.

The move is part of a revamp of the company’s support policies for its operating systems, Microsoft said.

Previously, Microsoft had committed to support consumer software with security updates, and bug and stability fixes, for five years, a period designated as “mainstream” support. Meanwhile, business software was supported for at least 10 years: The first half in mainstream support, the second in “extended” support.

During extended support, Microsoft provides security patches to everyone, but offers other fixes only to organizations that have signed support contracts with Microsoft.

Until the change, Vista’s consumer editions — Home Basic, Home Premium, Starter and Ultimate — were to be retired from support in less than two months, on April 10, 2012. The new policy extends that date to April 11, 2017.

Windows 7′s consumer editions were due to drop off the support list on Jan. 13, 2015, a deadline that has now been moved to Jan. 14, 2020.

This is a Numerical keypad with Mobee’s Magic Numpad, a horribly-named accessory which lets the Trackpad do double (or actually quadruple) duty.Numpad consist of three stick-on films which you can apply to the pad. These are overlays showing a plain number pad, a number pad plus the pointless other keys usually found in this section of a keyboard, and a number pad with a set of customizable keys. Vizio 8″ Tablet Delivers Hulu Plus Support

by Shipra

vizio4

Portable entertainment – that is the name of the game for many hardware manufacturers and software developers these days. Once you have fantastic hardware alongside a stable software platform to deliver digital media to a portable device that can be carried around anywhere, and you’ve got yourself a winner – if the price is also sensitive to what folks are comfortable with, of course.

Well, Vizio, the company that tends to make great TVs without breaking the bank is back with their Vizio 8″ tablet that is said to support the Hulu Plus service, where you can download the necessary software required from Android Market for free to get your portable entertainment action going on. Anyone who wants to pick up a tablet just to keep themselves entertained while they’re on-the-go might want to consider what Vizio offers with their sub-$300 tablet now. Let us talk about the app itself – this is one app that has certainly generated its fair share of buzz prior to its release, where it will deliver a massive library of TV and film content from more than hundreds of providers and independent creators, where subscribers who rock to the Vizio tablet will be able to enjoy such a rich cache of entertainment for just $7.99 each month.

The Hulu Plus subscription service is said to complement Vizio’s mission of delivering high-quality technology and “Entertainment Freedom™” to consumers without causing too much strain on your monthly budget. Think about it – if you purchase a single DVD each month, why not spend that money on a monthly subscription instead? Each subscription will let you gain instant access to current and past seasons of shows like 30 Rock, Modern Family, The X-Files, Arrested Development and Family Guy.

Heck, the Vizio table is Wi-Fi capable, letting you surf the Net as well whenever you aren’t busy watching your favorite movies from the past or recent blockbusters, and to make sure it can rock your world, a trio of speakers has been thrown in to enhance audio whether you place the Vizio tablet in landscape or portrait modes. A built-in universal remote app for home theater control and a HDMI port rounds off the list of prominent features.

Now Android apps Can Be Enjoyed On Blackberry Phones

by Shipra

Playbook_android_apps

Now, Android apps can be enjoyed on Blackberry phones too. As Blackberry does not have enough of its own applications and having Android apps would also lessen the struggle to persuade developers to make Blackberry apps has led to the conclusion that; Blackberry gadgets will now use Android apps. It was stated that RIM would sign a contract with Google’s 250,000 apps and it was later confirmed by RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis. Popular software maker Myriad demonstrated Alien Dalvik software according to which, Android apps can easily run on other platforms. Now, users will see the new features in Blackberry’s forthcoming mobile phones which would entirely be based on a new operating system called QNX. According to some sources, someone in Waterloo., Ontario has been running ShopSavvy on various Blackberry gadgets. As per the firm, the 8300, 8600 and 8520 models were found running ShopSavy this year. The best part is; incorporating Android apps would not be difficult since Blackberry OS can support Java Virtual Machines which is pretty amazing. But it is still a major question as whether all QNX phones will Android apps or not. OS can support Java Virtual Machines which is pretty amazing. But it is still a major question as whether all QNX phones will Android apps or not.

Samsung Announces Release Of The Software Development Kit for bada 2.0

by Shipra

Samsung-wave-723-660x408

Samsung has announced the release of their Software Development Kit for bada 2.0, Samsung’s own mobile platform. The operating system is expected to be released next month alongside three new Samsung Wave smartphones. While most of North America isn’t familiar with Samsung’s proprietary OS, phones running already running a beta version of bada have a small market presence in Europe and Asia. In the second quarter of 2011, bada accounted for 1.9 percent of all smartphone operating systems in use worldwide, according to a study by Gartner. That still beats out Windows Phone 7 sales.Bada 2.0 was first shown at the Mobile World Congress in February, featuring a slew of updated software including multi-tasking, access to an app store with about 40,000 applications, NFC support, and HTML5 and Flash functionality.

“Developers have an opportunity to reach a significant customer base with new, entertaining and compelling applications,” said JK Shin, president of Samsung’s mobile communications, in a statement. The SDK is available for download from the bada developer website.

Verbatim SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive Now In Eye-Popping Colors

by Shipra

When it comes to portable storage, you can be sure that Verbatim ranks pretty high up there – and one of the company’s latest releases, the Verbatim SuperSpeed USB 3.0 portable hard drive, will now be available in a couple of eye-popping colors – Caribbean Blue and Hot Pink. What a great way to usher in the summer with such vibrant, bright colors, no? I am guessing that Verbatim wants to deliver both style and function in a single device, hence splashing a couple of colors that normally don’t see the light of day in portable hard drives.

As for the amount of storage space, you might want to rethink all those downloads you make – after all, 500GB isn’t that much to go around these days. Good thing it is connected via USB 3.0, so make sure your computer has such a port to make full use of it. Transferring 500GB worth of data over USB 3.0 is going to be a snap, and with the ability to reliably back-up and transfer files anytime, anywhere, this might just be what you are looking for.

Verbatim claims that this is the “perfect way to save, store and share your favorite videos, photos, music and more”, although we might beg to differ simply because the 500GB of storage space is not going to go too far in this day and age. At the very least, it makes for a colorful accessory to your computing gear, don’t you think so?

The Verbatim SuperSpeed USB 3.0 portable hard drive will play nice with all USB ports of yore, and it will ship with Nero BackItUp & Burn Essentials software that delivers full system backup and restore functions, while you will also benefit from the ability to schedule automatic backup by date/time and an encrypted backup option with password control.

Whenever the drive is not in use, you can always use the Green Button software which offers three sleep/suspend settings to help save energy. The Formatter software is handy when you want to change the format of the drive from FAT32 to NTFS or HFS+ in a jiffy. Nice to know Verbatim decided to throw in a 7-year limited warranty with this $99.99 purchase.

Software Update Causes Headaches for Some Droid Users

by Shipra

A software update is supposed to deliver the latest and greatest features to your device. It’s not supposed to cripple your device. And yet that’s exactly what happened to a number of customers who received the most recent update to their Droid X phones. In early June, Verizon began rolling out Android operating system version 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) to the Droid X, which previously ran Android 2.2 (Froyo). Shortly thereafter, the grievances started rolling in on Motorola’s online customer message board. Complaints about the update spanned the entire gamut. Customers experienced random reboots, delayed start up times, weakened 3G connectivity, reduced keyboard functionality; the list goes on and on. In two of the update’s most egregious offenses, a number of users seems to have lost the ability to store contact information locally on the phone itself. Google has continually faced problems keeping all the different Android-powered handsets up to date on the latest version of its software. For some phones, it’s simply an issue of the hardware being too old to run the newest Android release. For others, the reasoning isn’t as clear. It is worth noting, however, that manufacturers have less incentive to devote company resources to update older devices rather than spend time on newer ones. It’s unfortunate to see a software update do more harm than good, especially when a company provides a software update to a phone that was released over a year ago. In one lengthy, exhaustive post, a user on the official Motorola message board web site has documented all the reported problems associated with the update: 80 different problems to date. Verizon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Motorola issued a statement to Wired.com Friday morning: “We’ve noted the forum feedback, and we are working closely with Verizon on an update for these users.” An official Motorola forums moderator stated multiple times over the past two months that the company is looking into a software fix, but no official timeline has been released.

The kicker to all of this? You can’t easily roll back to the previous version of Android without using third-party software. That means voiding your phone’s warranty, which isn’t exactly a popular option. So unfortunately for frustrated Droid X owners, they’ll have to play the waiting game with Verizon and Motorola until a fix is released — or shell out the cash for a new phone.
