Samsung Announces 4-Inch Galaxy Ace

by vinayak mathur

samsungSamsung has launched the Galaxy Ace 3, a low-end (or entry-level, if you prefer) Android smartphone with a 4-inch screen and LTE capability.

The specifications are nothing to write home about: a 1GHz dual-core processor, 4-inch, 480×800 display, a 5-megapixel camera, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of memory, expandable via microSD cards.

The device is powered by Android 4.2 and also comes as a dual-SIM device — all in all, your standard low-end Android smartphone.

Samsung hopes to bring it a notch above the competition with a bunch of S-features, normally available in the company’s premium smartphones. These include the S Translator, which gives instantaneous translations at any time, S Travel, which provides travel guides and info, and S Voice, which offers voice command functionality.

The Galaxy Ace 3 will be available as 3G or LTE, depending on the market. The price and exact date of availability have not been announced.

Stare at a Samsung Galaxy S4 For 60 Minutes to Win One

by vinayak mathur

Because the Samsung Galaxy S4 can sense when you’re looking at it, Swisscom hilariously set up a challenge for people to stare at the phone for an hour. If you hit the 60 minute mark, you win a free Samsung Galaxy S4. If you get distracted, you don’t get one. Easy? Not as easy as you think!

It would have been a good ol’ fashioned stare down (you can blink) but Swisscom threw some epic distractions in the simple staring contest. People who played the game were distracted by barking dogs, singers, arguing couples, burning hot dog vendors and motorcycle crashes. I’m pretty sure I would have failed. Though I’m pretty sure I would have failed without any distractions too.

Google announces Samsung Galaxy S4 with ‘stock’ Android, coming in June for $649

by vinayak mathur

images (1)Inline with earlier rumours, Google announced a variant of the Samsung Galaxy S4 that runs stock Android at the Google I/O event in San Francisco.

Google will be selling the phone bootloader and SIM unlocked on Google Play Store at a price of $649 (Rs. 35,500 approximately) before taxes and shipping starting June 26. Since the phone is SIM unlocked, it should work on GSM operators across the globe. Bootloader unlocked means the users are free to install any custom Android ROM on the phone, or, theoretically at least, any other OS on their phone altogether.

As mentioned earlier, the phone runs ‘stock’ Android, which means it is free from any third-party skins or software and provides the Android experience as Google intended. Google also confirmed that the phone will receive updates directly from Google, just like the Nexus phones.

As of now, Google has announced plans to sell the phone only in the US and plans to launch the phone in other countries remain unclear.

The phone targets users and developers who prefer the stock version of Android over the version that adds Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface layer. We’re not sure if many are fans of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI, that has been panned for employing big, glossy and cartoon-like icons and menus. So the phone might find favour among Android enthusiasts who’d like to have all the power that the Galaxy S4 carries under the hood along with the simplicity of stock Android.

We wonder what will happen to Samsung’s custom apps, motion and hand gestures, and camera features such as dual-shot, employing the use of both front and back camera, eraser shot mode to remove people from photos, and a Cinemagram like feature called Cinema Photo. The phone’s apps also make use of its several hardware sensors including temperature and humidity sensors. It will be interesting to see if Samsung has deployed additional apps and software to offer the same functionality or totally get rid of it.

The existence of the phone was reported a day before and now we know that it’s in fact a real deal.

Samsung had unveiled the Galaxy S4 on March 14. The phone sports a 5-inch full-HD screen with a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels, and pixel density of 441ppi. It is powered by 1.6GHz Exynos octa-core processor in some regions, and a 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor in others. It has 2GB of RAM and a PowerVR SGX544MP3 triple-core GPU.

The smartphone comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants but will also feature a microSD card slot for expanding the memory. The Galaxy S4 sports a 13-megapixels rear shooter and a 2-megapixel one on the front.

Previously, HTC had released a developer edition of the HTC One in limited quantities in the US. The phone which is available SIM and bootloader unlocked, is offered at a price of $649. However, that does not run stock version of Android. Previously, HTC had released a developer edition of the HTC One in limited quantities in the US. Samsung To Launch 5G, Speed Of 1Gbps By 2020

by vinayak mathur

imagesSamsung Electronics has developed core technology that will allow it to deliver high-speed 5G wireless data connections to consumers by 2020, the company announced today. The system allows data transmission up to several hundred times faster than current 4G networks.

5G mobile communications technology is the next generation of 4G LTE networks tech and can offer data transmission speeds of up to several tens of Gbps per base station. Once 5G networks are commercialized, they will allow users to transmit massive data files, including UHD movies and remote medical services, “practically without limitation,” Samsung claims.

4G connections have gradually become available to consumers around the world since 2008, but many countries, including China, are still working toward launching their LTE networks. Samsung says, however, that its new adaptive array transceiver technology overcomes the limitations that millimeter-wave bands had when transmitting data over long distances. It transmits data in the millimeter-wave band at a frequency of 28 GHz at a speed of up to 1.056 Gbps to a distance of up to 2 kilometers.

“The millimeter-wave band is the most effective solution to recent surges in wireless Internet usage. Samsung’s recent success in developing the adaptive array transceiver technology has brought us one step closer to the commercialization of 5G mobile communications in the millimeter-wave bands,” said Samsung executive vice president and head of digital medial and communication R&D ChangYeong Kim.

Samsung isn’t the only company to announce that it has developed 5G core tech. In February, NTT DoCoMo confirmed that it had successfully conducted a 10Gbps wireless test.

by vinayak mathur

samsung-galaxy-s4-gloves-635Samsung has launched its much-anticipated smartphone Galaxy S4 in India priced at Rs. 41,500 for the 16GB variant.

Samsung had unveiled the Galaxy S4 smartphone on 14 March. The phone sports a 5-inch full-HD screen with a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels, and pixel density of 441ppi. It is powered by 1.6GHz Exynos octa-core processor and comes with 2GB of RAM.

The smartphone will come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants but will also feature a microSD card slot for expanding the storage. The Galaxy S4 sports a 13-megapixels rear shooter and a 2-megapixel one on the front. The Galaxy S4 also offers more camera features including dual-shot, employing the use of both front and back camera, an eraser shot mode to remove people from photos, and a Cinemagram like feature called Cinema Photo, among several other tricks.

However, the phone has a noticeable omission in the form of missing FM radio.

Worldwide demand for the phone is strong and the phone is expected to be in short supply initially.

“Due to overwhelming global demand of Galaxy S4, the initial supply may be limited. We expect to fulfill inventory to meet demands in the coming weeks,” the company said in a statement.

“Demand is far stronger than we had expected and as a result we are having difficulties in fully meeting initial supply requests,” Lee Don-joo, head of sales and marketing at Samsung’s mobile business, told reporters in Seoul.

Samsung on Friday reported its sixth straight quarter of profit growth ahead of Galaxy S4′s debut, the South Korean giant’s biggest assault on rival Apple yet. Samsung Galaxy S4 is expected to be available on 327 mobile carriers across 155 countries.

Samsung NX1100 Smart Camera

by vinayak mathur

Samsung is extremely well known for churning out a wide range of consumer electronics devices, and their Smart TVs have really taken center stage for quite some time already, and so have their collection of smartphones, especially with the Samsung Galaxy S3 that has proven to be quite a tough competitor against the likes of the Apple iPhone. What about the digital camera market? Well, they do have some decent offerings, but right now, if you are going to pick up a dedicated digital camera, the name Samsung is not going to be at the top of your list, although they have tried pretty well in the past. Their latest offering would be the Samsung NX1100 Smart camera that is said to blend professional image quality alongside instant photo sharing and editing.

samsung-announces-nx1100-whiteJust what does the Samsung NX1100 Smart camera offer right out of the box? For starters, it will boast of a 20.3-megapixel CMOS sensor that will offer with it fast shutter speeds of up to 1/4000 seconds, allowing the NX1100 to capture premium photos and videos which have been rated to be on par with those found in Samsung’s NX Series. The Samsung NX1100 will bring with it a large, bright 3.0-inch LCD display for you to compose images, 1080p HD video capture, as well as technologies such as Smart Auto 2.0, which would enable even a novice photographer to snap photos like an expert.

Not only that, if you want to share memories with the Samsung NX1100, then it is a snap to do so, where a single touch of a button would allow the user to connect over a Wi-Fi network, where this is made possible courtesy of a dedicated Smart Link Hot Key that is located on the top of the camera. Pressing that button lets you share photos instantly and securely between the camera and a mobile device, or you can also opt to do so directly to social media sites like Facebook and YouTube.

To ensure that you get the most bang out of your hard-earned buck, the Samsung NX1100 will also be bundled with Lightroom 4, which already carries a $149 value and easily upgradeable with a release of each future version. How much will the Samsung NX1100 cost if you are interested in picking one up? $599.99 should be about right, where it comes in white and black shades.

Samsung announces Galaxy Mega smartphones

by vinayak mathur

imagesSamsung, a company that has for the longest time churned out their fair share of consumer electronics for the world in addition to hot selling smartphones, are back this time around with a couple of sizes under the same name – the Samsung Galaxy Mega. They sure as heck were not kidding with the release of the Samsung Galaxy Mega. This particular smartphone is said to come with the portability and convenience of a smartphone, in addition to having the power, multitasking capabilities and extensive viewing experience of a tablet. Yes sir, we are referring to the proverbial “best of both worlds” here, where you will be able to choose from 5.8” and 6.3” displays.

Regardless of which screen size you decided to settle on its High Definition LCD display will obviously boast of landscape mode support, which delivers an exceptional widescreen view for a wide range of applications that range from web browsing to video, and SNS. Despite the rather large footprint, you can be sure that the Samsung Galaxy Mega is not going to be heavy on your pockets, since it is touted to be incredibly light and thin, delivering extreme portability and easy, convenient mobile phone use.

There is the ‘Group Play’ mode that enables easy content sharing for up to 8 different devices on the same Wi-Fi network, while ‘Samsung WatchON’ is capable of transforming it into an IR remote controller, letting you enjoy a richer TV experience. ‘Samsung Link’ itself makes life a cinch, as you easily stream photos, videos, notes, or music to your TV, tablet or computer. The presence of ‘S Translator’ delivers instant translation, whether it relies on text or voice translation on different applications including email, and ChatON.

Expect the Galaxy Mega to offer a range of applications such as email, messages, ‘MyFiles,’ ‘S Memo,’ and ‘S Planner’, among others, where it will also sport an 8-megapixel camera at the back and a 1.9-megapixel shooter in front, coupled with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice and a dual core processor. No word on pricing, but the Samsung Galaxy Mega will be available worldwide from next month onwards.
