The spnKiX Electric Motorized Skates

This is the spnKiX, and it is a pair of electric roller skates. I guess those Segways were not enough for us, and we had to come up with some form of single human transportation.

The spnKiX are capable of about ten miles per hour, and they can only travel about two or three miles before the battery runs out. Want to go further? Well, you will have to wait about two hours as the lithium ion battery charges.

So I guess what we are looking at is way to get around for short distances. For example, if you only have a few miles to go to work, you can charge them up while you are on the job and electro-skate home.

If you pledge about $375 at the Kickstarter site, you will find that you can get yourself a pair after the Kickstarter member raises $25,000 for production. If you are willing to pledge about $950, then you can get a special edition with matte black wheels.

Airconditioner in your jacket

A team at Kuchofuku Co Ltd says its jacket contains two electric fans powered by a lithium-ion battery pack which lasts for 11 hours on a single charge, requiring significantly less energy than conventional air conditioning.

And what the jacket lacks in the fashion stakes, it more than compensates for in cooling powers, costing from around 87 pounds, it can draw in 20 litres of air per second which then circulates throughout the garment before escaping through collars and cuffs, ‘The Daily Telegraph’ reported.

Describing how the idea of “personal air-conditioning” came about, Hiroshi Ichigaya, the President of Kuchofuku, was quoted as saying, “It came to me that we don’t need to cool the entire room, just as long as people in it feel cool.”

In fact, sales for clothes with their own personal aircon systems are soaring in Japan, as the country seeks ever more ingenious ways of cooling down while saving energy as the nuclear crisis rumbles on.
The jacket is one of a range of popular cooling products made by the company – including cushions and mattresses, containing their patented plastic mesh system allowing the circulation of air.

Sony plans to make batteries for electric vehicles

Sony Corp. is in talks with several automakers inside and outside of Japan to make lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles from the middle of the 2010s, expecting a sharp increase in demand, an executive of the electronics company said Tuesday.

"We will consider building factories, including one overseas, if demand becomes full blown," Sony Senior Vice President Shigeki Ishizuka told reporters at a new factory for building battery devices in Motomiya, Fukushima Prefecture.

The company will also consider developing batteries for gasoline-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, Ishizuka said.

The Japanese electronics maker is currently developing a lithium-ion battery with a long life that is resistant to deterioration even when recharged repeatedly.

Ishizuka visited the factory of subsidiary Sony Energy Devices Corp. on the day the company unveiled a new plant building there to manufacture electrodes for lithium-ion batteries to be used in such products as electrical power tools.
