Nexus 4 launches in India @ Rs 25,999

by vinayak mathur

imagesLG and Google announced that Nexus 4, the official Android phone, would be available in India in the coming days at an MRP of Rs 25,999. Yesterday, the device became available for pre-order on Flipkart, an e-commerce site, starting at a price of Rs 25,990.

Sources said that the pre-order was part of an exclusive deal that Flipkart had struck with LG.

“LG Electronics is pleased to partner Google on the release of the Nexus 4 in India,” shared Soon Kwon, managing director, LG Electronics India. “We added the best of our talent to our strength, and the result is a feature-packed smartphone that packs superb hardware under a slim hood.”

For now, LG had announced details about only the model with 16GB internal storage and not about the 8GB one, which could be cheaper by at least a few thousands rupees.

Nexus 4 has a 4.7-inch screen with 720P resolution. The phone is powered by a quad-core processor and has 2GB RAM. It has a 8MP primary camera and a 1.3MP front camera. The phone doesn’t support microSD card and has a battery that cannot be replaced by users.

The real appeal of the Nexus 4 lies in the software it runs. Like all Nexus devices, it is powered by an unmodified version of Android and is guaranteed to get quick updates whenever Google comes out with the new version of the OS.

This is in stark contrast to other devices that get updates several months after Google had introduced the new version of Android. In an interview to Wired, Sundar Pichai, Android division head at Google, acknowledged that the company was working to fix the update process.

Google usually sells Nexus devices online through its Play Store. But sources said that Nexus 4 would be sold only by LG and its retail partners.

The phone was launched in the global markets last year. At that time an LG executive claimed that it would be available in India in October. But the plans to launch it didn’t materialize.

So far Google has made six Nexus phones and tablets. Nexus 4 is the third from the series to hit India. The other two are Nexus S and Nexus 7.

Google testing Google Shopping in India

by vinayak mathur

telescopesGoogle has started displaying shopping results with search listings in India for select users.

What this essentially means is that when you search for a product, Google displays product listings from online retailers on the right side of the results page complete with product images, pricing and direct links under “Shop for ‘Product name’ on Google.”

When we entered the search term ‘Samsung Galaxy S4′, Google displayed shopping listings from Flipkart, HomeShop18 and Yebhi. It’s not just limited to mobile phones and tablets and we got shopping results for a wide range of products including apparel, LED TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators, among others. Online apparel store, Myntra is another partner as we also spotted results from the site.

On clicking the information icon accompanying the listing Google elaborates the reason why it displayed these products as: “Based on your search query, we think you are trying to find a product. Clicking in this box will show you results from providers who can fulfill your request. Google may be compensated by some of these providers.”

It’s worth pointing out that we got the Shopping listings results when we used Google search in Safari on a Mac, while we did not get them while using another browser.

At the time of writing this post, Google offers Google Shopping in United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Italy, and Czech Republic. Perhaps Google is testing the feature with random users and would make an official announcement in the coming days.

In June 2012, Google announced that it would rename its Product Search feature for users in the US to Google Shopping. It also said that it was changing the way these search results worked.

The transition to the new model was completed in October.

Search results are now influenced by how much retailers and advertisers paid to Google under its Google Shopping program. In the past, product search results were based mainly on relevance and the program was free. Google offers an API to participating companies through which they can manage listings.

by vinayak mathur

lenovo-k900Lenovo K900, the 5.5-inch phablet with Intel’s dual-core Clover Trail+ processor inside, is set to launch in India on May 10 at a “very aggressive price”

The India launch will be accompanied by a huge marketing push by the company, likely a TV campaign for the K900 corresponding with the final stages of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). While the exact launch price isn’t known yet, our sources have revealed that K900 is likely to be priced in the sub-Rs. 25,000 (~$460) category, making it an excellent value for money proposition given the power it packs under the hood.

Lenovo K900 was first showcased at CES earlier this year. The K900 packs in Intel’s dual-core Clover Trail+ platform, specifically the Intel Atom Z2580 dual-core processor clocking in at 2GHz. The device features a full-HD display, 2GB RAM and is expected to come with 16GB of internal storage.

Earlier this month, benchmarks featuring the device surfaced online, which showed the Lenovo K900 rubbing shoulders with the Samsung Galaxy S4 as far as pure benchmarks are concerned.

Having this much power at 50-60% of the cost of the Samsung Galaxy S4 will surely excite prospective customers, though Lenovo will have to address issues like brand image and dealer network, for the device to gain traction in the India market.

Samsung Galaxy S II Plus goes on sale in India

by vinayak mathur

imagesSamsung Galaxy S II Plus, the follow-up to the popular Galaxy S II smartphone, is now available for sale in India. Online retailer Infibeam is selling the device, which was announced in January 2013, at Rs 22,990. Though, the device so far is not listed on Samsung India’s official website, Infibeam’s listing shows the actual price as Rs 23,999.

The all-new Samsung Galaxy S II Plus features only a few incremental upgrades over Samsung Galaxy S II. Samsung galaxy S II Plus shares most of the hardware specifications with the original model, such as 4.3-inch SuperAMOLED screen with WVGA resolution, dual-core 1.2GHz processor and 8MP camera. The phone has same 1,650mAh battery as that of Galaxy S II. Both the devices also have NFC support.

The main change is that the new smartphone comes with Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) straight out of the box, layered with TouchWiz Nature user interface. This device has 8GB of onboard memory vis-a-vis Galaxy S II’s 16GB; and microSD card support of up to 64GB in comparison to S II’s 32GB.

Additions include Smart Stay, Direct Call, Smart Alert, Popup Video, S Voice, Voice Unlock, Buddy Photo Share, AllShare Play and Samsung Hubs.

Going by the features and specifications, Galaxy S II Plus differs from its older sibling mainly on the software side. However, here too the manufacturer has already begun rolling out the Android 4.1 update for Galaxy S II in various countries, though it has not hit India yet.

Samsung Galaxy S II is currently available at Rs 25,900.
