Google announces unified messaging service Hangouts

by vinayak mathur

google-hangoutsGoogle has announced a unified messaging service called Hangouts that merges its various messaging platforms including Google Talk, Google+ Hangouts, Messenger and Google Talk for Google+ into one platform, at the Google I/O event in San Francisco.

The app has been released on iOS, Android and for Chrome (as an extension) and allows users to share text, photos and live video with each other. Like other Google services, users will require a Google account to use the service and it doesn’t just work by registering one’s mobile number unlike WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. However, in our use we discovered that it did verify our mobile number when we installed the app on our iPhone and signed-in with our Google account credentials.

The functionality of the app is similar to Hangouts that existed in Google+ and you get a list of existing interactions when you open the app. There’s a + (plus) symbol at the top right corner tapping on which displays big thumbnails of six of your contacts and a list of people who are in your Google+ circles. It also offers a search box where you can type a name, email, phone number or name of a circle to see more contacts. You can select the contacts you want to chat with and start a text or video hangout. The hangout could also be limited to one contact but you’ll still need to select the thumbnail and tap on the text or video button to initiate the interaction. You can then send photo and text messages or start a video chat anytime during the conversation. Google has also introduced 850 new hand-drawn emoticons and the service notifies you of the other person typing a message.

You can customise how you receive Hangout notifications, who can send you requests or directly initiate hangouts and block people you don’t want to talk to. The app supports multiple accounts so you can chat with contacts on the lists of two or more Google accounts.

It’s also interesting to note that notifications are synced across devices which means that if you start a conversation on the web and continue with it on your phone, the web interaction would also get updated.

We feel that Google has essentially tried to unify its messaging services across the PC and mobile without getting into the territory of services like Viber and WhatsApp. We already knew about the service after a series of leaks that began since the time Google was testing it as Babel.

Google announces Samsung Galaxy S4 with ‘stock’ Android, coming in June for $649

by vinayak mathur

images (1)Inline with earlier rumours, Google announced a variant of the Samsung Galaxy S4 that runs stock Android at the Google I/O event in San Francisco.

Google will be selling the phone bootloader and SIM unlocked on Google Play Store at a price of $649 (Rs. 35,500 approximately) before taxes and shipping starting June 26. Since the phone is SIM unlocked, it should work on GSM operators across the globe. Bootloader unlocked means the users are free to install any custom Android ROM on the phone, or, theoretically at least, any other OS on their phone altogether.

As mentioned earlier, the phone runs ‘stock’ Android, which means it is free from any third-party skins or software and provides the Android experience as Google intended. Google also confirmed that the phone will receive updates directly from Google, just like the Nexus phones.

As of now, Google has announced plans to sell the phone only in the US and plans to launch the phone in other countries remain unclear.

The phone targets users and developers who prefer the stock version of Android over the version that adds Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface layer. We’re not sure if many are fans of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI, that has been panned for employing big, glossy and cartoon-like icons and menus. So the phone might find favour among Android enthusiasts who’d like to have all the power that the Galaxy S4 carries under the hood along with the simplicity of stock Android.

We wonder what will happen to Samsung’s custom apps, motion and hand gestures, and camera features such as dual-shot, employing the use of both front and back camera, eraser shot mode to remove people from photos, and a Cinemagram like feature called Cinema Photo. The phone’s apps also make use of its several hardware sensors including temperature and humidity sensors. It will be interesting to see if Samsung has deployed additional apps and software to offer the same functionality or totally get rid of it.

The existence of the phone was reported a day before and now we know that it’s in fact a real deal.

Samsung had unveiled the Galaxy S4 on March 14. The phone sports a 5-inch full-HD screen with a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels, and pixel density of 441ppi. It is powered by 1.6GHz Exynos octa-core processor in some regions, and a 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor in others. It has 2GB of RAM and a PowerVR SGX544MP3 triple-core GPU.

The smartphone comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants but will also feature a microSD card slot for expanding the memory. The Galaxy S4 sports a 13-megapixels rear shooter and a 2-megapixel one on the front.

Previously, HTC had released a developer edition of the HTC One in limited quantities in the US. The phone which is available SIM and bootloader unlocked, is offered at a price of $649. However, that does not run stock version of Android. Previously, HTC had released a developer edition of the HTC One in limited quantities in the US. Google revamps Maps service

by vinayak mathur

Google says it has rebuilt Google Maps for the Web with a new version that’s more immersive and social.

The new version takes a page from Google’s mobile efforts by putting the search box inside the map and making use of cards — Google’s take on interactive information widgets.

“It’s simple and powerful. The map is the user interface,” Google’s Bernhard Seefeld told attendees at the company’s annual developers conference, where the new Web service was unveiled.

When users click on locations, information about those areas appears on cards. Information can include navigation, which offers a comparison between driving times and public transit times in one spot. Maps also offers social results, showing places that friends have reviewed.

The Maps interface features a 3D view, which Google says does not require any additional software or browser plug-ins. This is a similar experience to what Google has offered in its Earth app. In fact, users can zoom all the way out to see the entire Earth with a live view of clouds.

One other new feature is a way to upload Photosphere images to Google Maps, which Google referred to as a user-generated street view. These can be uploaded by locations, adding an extra layer of information for people to view.

Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter apps announced for Google Glass

by vinayak mathur

glass_2565322bFacebook and Twitter have launched applications for Google glasses as developers rushed to learn more about tailoring software for the Internet-linked eyewear yet to hit the market.
“Built by Facebook, this app allows you to upload photos from Google Glass directly to your Facebook timeline,” Erick Tseng, head of mobile products at the social network, said in a message posted from the Google developers conference.

“You can also add an optional photo description, just by speaking it.”

Tseng’s Facebook page displayed an image evidently taken in a packed Glass session at the gathering and was tagged as the first public post to the social network using the application built for the eyewear.

“Can’t wait to start seeing Google Glass photos in my News Feed!” Tseng said.

Globally popular messaging service Twitter also introduced an application for Glass.

Twitter for Google Glass let people share pictures or text messages using the glasses, according to engineering manager Shiv Ramamurthi.

Ramamurthi demonstrated his point by tweeting an image from one of the array of sessions devoted to providing developers with insights and tools for making software for Glass. He gave the picture the hashtag #throughglass.

“In addition to sharing photos, you can also keep up with the people you follow on Twitter through notifications,” Ramamurthi said. “As always, you can reply to, retweet or favorite these Tweets.”

Several major news organizations have also tailored applications for Glass, which has only been made available to developers and a limited selection of “explorers” who paid $1,500 each for the eyewear.

Google Glass was a common sight at the California-based Internet giant’s annual developers conference, which continues here through Friday.

Software savants at the gathering shared visions of games, weather reports, news and more delivered to the Internet-linked eyewear.

Many of the 6,000 developers attending an annual Google I/O event in San Francisco sported Glass in what was unofficially deemed the largest ever gathering of Glass wearers.

Envisioned uses ranged from practical tasks such as shopping or delivering local weather reports to sharing real time video streams of riding cable cars or playing augmented reality games in which the world is the board.

Glass lets wearers take pictures, record video, send messages, or perform other tasks with touch controls or by speaking “Okay Glass” followed by a command.

Glass connects to the Internet using Wi-Fi hot spots or, more typically, by being wirelessly tethered to mobile phones. Pictures or video can be shared through the Google+ social network.

Google co-founder and chief Larry Page depicted Glass as part of an ongoing effort to get computers “out of the way” so people can focus on lives enriched by what the Internet has to offer.

“We want to make sure we are building experiences that make people really happy,” Page said while speaking about Glass.

“We are relying on you to make happy users,” he told developers at the conference. “Ultimately, I think a lot of your experiences will move to Glass.”

Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt said recently that it will take “a while” before consumer versions of Glass are available.

Google testing Google Shopping in India

by vinayak mathur

telescopesGoogle has started displaying shopping results with search listings in India for select users.

What this essentially means is that when you search for a product, Google displays product listings from online retailers on the right side of the results page complete with product images, pricing and direct links under “Shop for ‘Product name’ on Google.”

When we entered the search term ‘Samsung Galaxy S4′, Google displayed shopping listings from Flipkart, HomeShop18 and Yebhi. It’s not just limited to mobile phones and tablets and we got shopping results for a wide range of products including apparel, LED TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators, among others. Online apparel store, Myntra is another partner as we also spotted results from the site.

On clicking the information icon accompanying the listing Google elaborates the reason why it displayed these products as: “Based on your search query, we think you are trying to find a product. Clicking in this box will show you results from providers who can fulfill your request. Google may be compensated by some of these providers.”

It’s worth pointing out that we got the Shopping listings results when we used Google search in Safari on a Mac, while we did not get them while using another browser.

At the time of writing this post, Google offers Google Shopping in United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Italy, and Czech Republic. Perhaps Google is testing the feature with random users and would make an official announcement in the coming days.

In June 2012, Google announced that it would rename its Product Search feature for users in the US to Google Shopping. It also said that it was changing the way these search results worked.

The transition to the new model was completed in October.

Search results are now influenced by how much retailers and advertisers paid to Google under its Google Shopping program. In the past, product search results were based mainly on relevance and the program was free. Google offers an API to participating companies through which they can manage listings.

Google+ hangouts get Remote Desktop option, troubleshoot your friend’s computer as you video chat

by vinayak mathur

Google has added a remote desktop feature to Google+ hangouts.

This essentially means that users will be able to remotely access the computer of their Google+ contacts for the purpose of troubleshooting it, and will be able to video chat with them throughout the process.

To access the feature, you’ll need to initiate a new hangout, select ‘View more apps’ from within the hangout, click on ‘Add apps’ and select Remote Desktop to download it. Following the installation of the app, you can simply invite the contact whose computer you want to troubleshoot and request for access. After the other user grants you permission, you’ll be able be access the user’s computer till he/ she ends the session.

Google’s Daniel Caiafa informed via a Google+ post that the service is powered by the technology behind Chrome Remote Desktop.

While Google+ hangout already allowed Screensharing for virtual meetings, Remote Desktop will allow Google to compete with services like LogMeIn and GoToMyPC that allow remote desktop access for troubleshooting. Tech support executives also use these services to assist their customers. With a large number of users using Gmail, it will make more sense for them to use Google+ Hangouts, a service closely integrated with other Google products. Perhaps Google will be able to claim more new Google+ users after starting  this service.

Just a few days back, Google had announced the integration of App Activities into its Web search, taking Google+ integration a step forward. This essentially meant that Google search will now include results related to apps or services that offer logins via Google+. For instance, if a user searches for SoundCloud, the results listings page will display popular and aggregate user activity on the right side of search results, showing total number of Google+ users signed-in on SoundCloud and popular sound clips among them in order of the number of users listening to them.

Google Now comes to iPhone, iPad as an update to Google Search app

by vinayak mathur

google_now_iosGoogle Inc is bringing its Google Now technology to the iPhone, where it will compete head-on with Apple Inc’s Siri to serve as the primary service that smartphone users rely on to get everything from weather updates to traffic forecasts.

Google Now, which made its debut last year on mobile devices powered by Google’s Android operating system, will be available as a feature in the new version of the Google Search app for iPhones and iPads starting on Monday.

Personal assistant technology such as Apple’s Siri, Google Now and products created by various start-up companies aspire to play what could become a critical role on smartphones by helping users with daily chores such as looking up information on the Web, handling calendar appointments and managing travel plans.

Some analysts believe Apple’s Siri, which comes pre-loaded on iPhones and iPads, represents a growing threat to Google, the world’s No. 1 search engine. The information that Siri provides on common topics such as sports scores and nearby restaurants reduces the need to visit Google’s search engine, the analysts say.

Johanna Wright, Google’s vice president of Search and Assist for Mobile, described Google Now as the next phase in the evolution of search, in which answers are served up without a user needing to type in a query.

The technology taps into Google’s various online services, from Web search to personal Gmail email and Google Calendar entries, to deliver relevant information throughout the day in pop-up windows that Google refers to as “cards.” By accessing an email with a flight itinerary, for example, Google Now can automatically remind a traveler about an upcoming trip and suggest the best time to leave for the airport based on current traffic conditions.

Unlike the Android version of Google Now, in which users can swipe the phone’s homescreen to quickly access the pop-up cards, the version for Apple’s iOS will only display these cards when a user has opened the Google Search app.

The smartphone has emerged as a key battleground between Google and Apple as consumers increasingly access the Web with mobile devices instead of personal computers.

In September, Apple replaced the Google Maps app that once came pre-loaded on iPhones with a new maps app that Apple created in-house. The Apple maps service contained embarrassing errors, drawing fierce criticism from consumers and reviewers and forcing Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook to offer a public apology.

iPhone hacker goes from Apple to intern for Google

by vinayak mathur

nicholas-allegra1Looks like Apple’s loss is Google’s gain. Nicholas Allegra, famously known as Comex, the guy behind the JailbreakMe hacking tools for iPhone and iPad will be joining Google as an intern.

Allegra broke the news via his Twitter account saying that he’d be interning with the search engine giant in a few weeks. He also tweeted that he won’t be working on Android, Google’s mobile operating system that competes with Apple’s iOS and that he never liked Android enough to hack it. The tweet was first spotted by Forbes, which also mentioned that the 19 year old hacker did not elaborate on what he’d be doing at Google.

Allegra created the JailbreakMe tool that exploits loopholes in Apple’s Safari web browser to jailbreak an iOS device in a single step, without requiring the user to plug the device to a computer. He worked under the pseudonym Comex, till Forbes revealed his identity in 2011.

Apple hired Allegra as an intern in August 2011. It even offered to extend his employment after an year but Allegra claims he missed responding to the mail that had the offer, following which Apple took the offer back.

For the uninitiated, users can run unapproved third party apps on their iOS devices after jailbreaking them.

The first version of JailbreakMe was released in 2007 used to jailbreak the iPhone and iPod Touch running the 1.1.1 version of iPhone OS and was developed by nine anonymous hackers. This was followed by the second version of the hack in 2010 released by Comex, that allowed users to jailbreak iOS 3.1.2 to 4.0.1 on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

The JailbreakMe 3.0 hack was released in 2011, and allowed anyone to jailbreak iOS devices on versions 4.3 to 4.3.3 and iPad 2 on iOS 4.3.3. It was the first hack to jailbreak the iPad 2. The jailbreak was a browser based hack that didn’t involve the use of any other tools. Apple was able to fix all the JailbreakMe hacks with a software update.

Google X to be released with Android Key Lime Pie 5.0.1

by vinayak mathur

xThe AnTuTu Benchmark result of Google X smartphone has confirmed the roll out of Android 5.0.1 (aka Android Key Lime Pie).

According to reports the confirmation is an indication that Google’s next version of Android could well be in Beta stages and on track to be launched at the Google I/O, which is scheduled for May.

Rumours have already suggested that the Google X smartphone will be powered by a processor that clocks up to 1.5GHz but it is yet to be seen if the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600, Snapdragon 800 or Tegra 4 has been deployed. However, earlier rumors had suggested that Motorola X smartphone will clock speed to the tunes of 2GHz and have a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.

Given that Google X has already started popping in benchmark results is also an indication that the smartphone might be launched in the near future.

As per past rumors, Motorola X smartphone will be highly customizable, will have a 4,000mAh battery and might be a water-proof device.

Earlier in the month, Google’s Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt had shared that the smartphones coming up at Motorola are “very, very impressive.” Schmidt had also remarked that, the new set of products will be phenomenal and these smartphones should not be termed as just phones, but “Phones-plus”.

Google adds ‘Quick View’ to mobile search results

by vinayak mathur

Googe-QuickViewGoogle has added ‘Quick View’ mode to Google Search for mobile allowing users to load select pages faster. When the user searches for something via the mobile version of Google.com, a blue “Quick view” badge would appear next to a few results. Clicking on the badge will load the page almost instantly.

According to Google, Quick view is an experimental project and is currently enabled for pages from Wikipedia when one searches in English on Google.com. It mentioned that it is working to expand this feature to additional websites.

We did not get the Quick View badge when searching while signed on with our Google credentials, but got the option when we logged out. We observed that Google essentially loads a pre-cached version of the Wikipedia page, as indicated by the ‘Cached by Google’ note along with the time of the caching at the bottom. Users can exit the view by simply clicking on the ‘View Original’ button.

Google has also added expandable sitelinks for a number of unspecified sites to mobile search, to help users get to a specific section quickly. It illustrates the feature with an example from Rotten Tomatoes.

“When you’re searching for information on the go, speed matters. If you want to check out Rotten Tomatoes for a new movie to go see with your friends, you might not want to navigate through the Rotten Tomatoes homepage to find the list of top movies while your friends are anxiously waiting. Now, there’s a faster way to get to the Rotten Tomatoes page with just the info you need most — just look for a new quick link for “In Theaters” underneath the main Rotten Tomatoes link when you search on your mobile phone.’
