Device powers gadgets through walking

by vinayak mathur

British scientists have built a novel device that converts body movement into electricity capable of powering small gadgets such as GPS trackers.

The device, unveiled this week in the July issue of the journal Smart Materials and Structures, is designed to be worn on the knee and harnesses the energy produced by walking.

The journal said it could be used by the military to reduce the number of heavy batteries – each weighing up to 10kg – that soldiers carry on foot patrol.

It was created by researchers at the Universities of Cranfield, Liverpool and Salford, originally with funding from the UK Ministry of Defence. The researchers estimate it could retail for 10 pounds (about R150) if produced on an industrial scale.

The “energy harvester” is based on so-called piezoelectric materials that have long been used in sonar sensors and ultrasound scanners and have become the focus of energy generation research in recent years.

Scientists at Princeton University and the California Institute of Technology used a similar technology two years ago to develop electricity-generating rubber sheets.

The novelty of the British device is the way it uses the body’s movements to generate power.

An outer ring that rotates as the knee joint moves is fitted with 72 plectra that in turn move four energy-generating arms called bimorphs attached to an inner hub. The vibration generates the electricity.

Michele Pozzi, who led the development project, said researchers were looking at ways to make the device cheaper and more portable.

“There is an on-going project looking at manufacturing a more compact and truly wearable harvester,” the journal’s website quoted Pozzi as saying. “At the moment we are using precise but cost-effective manufacturing techniques for the plectra and casing and anticipate that remaining parts will be moulded industrially, slashing the cost.”

At the moment, the piece can harvest about two milliwatts of power but the researchers believe this could exceed 30 milliwatts with a few enhancements, enough for the latest GPS tracking devices.

The gadget could also have uses in medical monitoring devices, he said. – Reuters

Head patch can monitor strokes better

by vinayak mathur

This device, known as frontal near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), could offer hospital physicians a safe and low-cost way to monitor strokes in real time, suggests a study.

A stroke is a sudden interruption in the blood supply to the brain. Most strokes are caused by an abrupt blockage of arteries leading to the brain.

“About one-third of stroke patients in the hospital suffer another stroke, and we have few options for constantly monitoring patients for such recurrences,” says senior study investigator William Freeman, associate professor of neurology at Mayo Clinic, the journal Neurosurgical Focus reports.

Currently, nurses monitor patients for new strokes and if one is suspected, patients must be moved to a hospital’s radiology unit for a test known as a CT perfusion scan, which is the standard way to measure blood flow and oxygenation, according to a Mayo statement.

The entire procedure can sometimes cause side-effects such as excess radiation exposure if repeated scans are required. Also, potential kidney and airway damage can result from the contrast medium.

Alternately, for the sickest patients, physicians can insert an oxygen probe inside the brain to measure blood and oxygen flow, but this procedure is invasive and measures only a limited brain region, Freeman says.

“We plan to study this device more extensively and hope that this bedside tool offers significant benefit to patients by helping physicians detect strokes earlier and manage recovery better,” he says.

This NIRS device, which emits near-infrared light that penetrates the scalp and underlying brain tissue, has been used in animals to study brain blood.

The Hourglass Device Digital Alert For Cooking

by Shipra

the_hourglass

The Hourglass Device is a new-age method of keeping the family together, especially during dinner times. It comprises of a sensor device modeled on the sand-hourglass timer and an affiliated app for the family gadgets. So basically when someone gets cooking in the kitchen, the aromas automatically trigger the sensors in the Hourglass and notifies the rest of the family what’s cooking. A good way to get my son to the dinner table on time!
Gwendolyn explains, “The hardware components consist of simple technology to make the product cheap (i.e. non-touch screen). When the hourglass is in range to a device, it will auto-launch an app or website via Wifi/NFC signal. The software for the device is a cloud network that sends simple programmable codes to operate the hourglass. For any graphic customizing or timer programs the user can access it online to easily modify (different screens, sounds, programs, family network, etc.) The idea is to revolutionize an old basic object that we cherish into a proactive connective object: wristwatches, calendars, digital note pads, jewelry, remote controls, desk clocks, picture frames, etc. These objects can contain the simple hardware components while its software is online in the cloud; this allows designers to remove any complicated set-up displays on tiny screens, menu keys, or other unnecessary buttons.”

Sony TX55-Slim Device With Many Features

by Shipra

The series of Cyber-shot cameras from Sony TX boasts with a slim body and a huge screen on the back. This time, the manufacturer has overstated these specifications. Sony TX55 has a thickness of 12.2 mm, but the people at Sony have cheated a little. They have not considered the sliding lid that protects the objective as if it could be removed. Even so, the dimensions are impressive and I did not even come to talk about specifications. Sony offers so many features into a shell so thin that you cannot but wonder about it.The camera’s sensor has 16.2 MP and is CMOS. Its performance should be good or at least the same with other devices on the market. This sensor is allowing with the Dual Rec functiontaking pictures at 12 MP when recording full HD. There isn’t any buttons on the back of the device. Instead, Sony has OLED screen of 3.3″.

Sony TX55‘s internal objective enables a 5x optical zoom, but the manufacturer boasts with a 10x zoom, which effectively keeps the image quality. By Pixel Super Resolution function processing the image obtained with digital zoom. Sony TX55 retains many of the facilities offered on previous models of the Japanese manufacturer, of which we mention Sweep Panorama, 3D Still Image and SteadyShot image stabilization.

Sony TX55 will enter the market in September, and the price of the device will be $ 350.

Acer planning a sliding Android tab for the holidays

by Shipra

Rumor has it that ASUS wont be the only company with a sliding Android tablet this holiday season — DigiTimes claims to have it on good authority that Acer will be launching its own 10.1-inch slate with a peekaboo QWERTY stashed behind the screen. The ARM-powered device is reportedly being manufactured by Compal, but beyond that your guess is as good as ours. By the time it lands we should be getting our first taste of Ice Cream Sandwich, but it’s a pretty safe bet if this unnamed device does ship later this year, it’ll do so with Honeycomb on board.
