Singapore mobile app flushes out clean and dirty toilets

by vinayak mathur

couple-mobile_635For those on the go, finding a clean toilet in Singapore and giving feedback on the best and worst commodes is now in hand with a new app for mobile phones and tablet computers.

The Restroom Association of Singapore (RAS) already has the LOO Connect service on its toilet.org.sg website that allows people to pinpoint and comment on public facilities and to see those given three, four or five stars.

With the new app for Android smartphones and tablets, the non-profit group said it was “leveraging on the ‘crowdsourcing’ trend and technology to recognise clean toilets and encourage socially responsible behaviour”.

“The mobile app also facilitates the collection of information by the RAS volunteers during mystery audits of toilets under the Happy Toilet Programme,” it said in a statement.

A similar app for iOS devices will be out in July, it said.

An RAS survey last year showed the foulest toilets in Singapore – a wealthy Southeast Asian city-state where the government runs regular campaigns to promote cleanliness and courtesy – tend to be in coffee shops, markets, bus terminals, food courts and subway stations.

The cleanest are in government offices, hospitals and restaurants.

Bad design and poor cleaning were cited in the survey as causes of dirty toilets. But the overwhelmingly worst offenders – at 79 percent – were identified as “irresponsible users”.

Google Now comes to iPhone, iPad as an update to Google Search app

by vinayak mathur

google_now_iosGoogle Inc is bringing its Google Now technology to the iPhone, where it will compete head-on with Apple Inc’s Siri to serve as the primary service that smartphone users rely on to get everything from weather updates to traffic forecasts.

Google Now, which made its debut last year on mobile devices powered by Google’s Android operating system, will be available as a feature in the new version of the Google Search app for iPhones and iPads starting on Monday.

Personal assistant technology such as Apple’s Siri, Google Now and products created by various start-up companies aspire to play what could become a critical role on smartphones by helping users with daily chores such as looking up information on the Web, handling calendar appointments and managing travel plans.

Some analysts believe Apple’s Siri, which comes pre-loaded on iPhones and iPads, represents a growing threat to Google, the world’s No. 1 search engine. The information that Siri provides on common topics such as sports scores and nearby restaurants reduces the need to visit Google’s search engine, the analysts say.

Johanna Wright, Google’s vice president of Search and Assist for Mobile, described Google Now as the next phase in the evolution of search, in which answers are served up without a user needing to type in a query.

The technology taps into Google’s various online services, from Web search to personal Gmail email and Google Calendar entries, to deliver relevant information throughout the day in pop-up windows that Google refers to as “cards.” By accessing an email with a flight itinerary, for example, Google Now can automatically remind a traveler about an upcoming trip and suggest the best time to leave for the airport based on current traffic conditions.

Unlike the Android version of Google Now, in which users can swipe the phone’s homescreen to quickly access the pop-up cards, the version for Apple’s iOS will only display these cards when a user has opened the Google Search app.

The smartphone has emerged as a key battleground between Google and Apple as consumers increasingly access the Web with mobile devices instead of personal computers.

In September, Apple replaced the Google Maps app that once came pre-loaded on iPhones with a new maps app that Apple created in-house. The Apple maps service contained embarrassing errors, drawing fierce criticism from consumers and reviewers and forcing Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook to offer a public apology.

Skype app coming to BlackBerry 10 devices

by vinayak mathur

imagesBlackBerry said it plans to fill one of the biggest gaps in the app line-up on its new BlackBerry 10 devices with a long-awaited Skype application.

Skype, which was acquired by Microsoft in 2011, allows its users to communicate via voice, video or chat over the Internet, by-passing traditional telephone networks. The service has hundreds of millions of users across the globe.

The announcement comes a day after BlackBerry said its new Q10 smartphone will be available in Canada on May 1, and in the United States before the end of May. The Q10, which comes with the physical keyboard that many of BlackBerry’s core fan base cherish, is the second device to be powered by the company’s new BB10 operating system.

Skype will be available on the Q10 on launch day. Users of the existing Z10 touchscreen device will have to wait a few weeks more to get Skype, after a software upgrade on the operating system, BlackBerry said.

A smaller app base than Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android platforms has been one of the biggest criticisms of the new BlackBerry system. It has yet to offer some big-name apps like Netflix and Instagram

Playboy launches new app for iPhones

rtr2mc6s-jpgA new iPhone app from Playboy forgoes the seductive photos of beautiful women that the men’s magazine is famous for in favour of lifestyle articles about travel, clothes, food, booze and more.

Scott Flanders, CEO of Playboy Enterprises, said the new app brings the best of Playboy with original, thought-provoking and enticing bite-sized content, reports Fox News.

Flanders said they have rebuilt Playboy for iPhone to attract the new generation of Gen Y fans who enjoy the indulgences of the artisanal good life and modern culture.

The Apple App Store has a reputation for excluding pornographic content, and for rigorously policing the market to prevent anything inappropriate, ranging from racy images to bullying apps.

Earlier in 2010, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had said that folks who want porn can buy an Android phone.

There are sections featuring photos of returning Playmates, videos of the models, a “Miss Social” feature on winners of an online competition for women with a devoted social media following, and more.

To unlock the racier content, Playboy fans have the option of subscribing monthly, bi-annually or annually to the app.

Josh Schollmeyer, Playboy’s Director of Digital Content said they have reinvented their aesthetic with exclusive pictorials and a beautiful, image-heavy navigation. He said the app is truly “Playboy 2.0″.

Delhi Metro to soon launch official mobile app

by vinayak mathur

images (2)Reaching out to commuters who use smartphones, Delhi Metro will soon launch a mobile application which will provide information regarding fares and stations including new ones coming up in Phase III.

The application is expected to work offline without internet/GPRS (one time download) which means that users will incur no running cost on it. Users will also be able to download latest version of application.

DMRC has floated a tender for developing the application, for which final date of submission is March 28.

Some facilities that the application will provide include information about nearest metro station, fare between stations, timings of last and first train at various stations, travel time, route information, metro map and parking availability on the station premises, an official said.

The commuters can also find landmarks and tourist spots near metro stations, get information about feeder services and helpline numbers. The application will also give commuters information about the new stations coming up in Phase III.

Based on the phone’s operating system and services, the application would also be able to determine the user’s current location by using GPS and direct the route to the destination.

A graphical representation of the Metro Map will enable the user to pan in, zoom in and out, and display user’s current location on metro route map, the official said.

Details of feeder buses available at different stations with their routes, DTC buses in route of metro station will also be available on the application.

The application will provide details of Metro Museum, such as how to reach the museum, timing, holidays, souvenir and their price, and whom to contact for assistance.

DMRC Helpline numbers for assistance, suggestion, complaint, and feedback and security helpline numbers to be contacted during emergency or security threat will be available in the application, the official said.

Among other things, the application can also be used to answer frequently asked questions about how to use smart cards, the items which are not allowed to be carried in the metro train and timings of the station.

App by Airtel founder’s son a big hit

by vinayak mathur

Hike-appHike, the newest kid on mobile instant messaging scene, has had such a wild welcome and adoption rate that it brought the servers down causing disruption in services.

The free mobile app, now on the top of the list on the Android marketplace Google Play Store, has been downloaded over a million times so far. “Signups will not work until 12pm tomorrow – 9th Feb – given the sudden increase in the volume,” an official blog post said. “We are working at lightening speed and will get this back up asap.”

Hike, launched on 14 November, is the brainchild of Kavin Bharti Mittal, son of Sunil Bharti Mittal founder-chairman of Bharti Airtel, India’s largest mobile network with over 180 million subscribers. Hike, was built by BhartiSoftBank, the 50-50 joint venture between Bharti and Japan’s mobile operator SoftBank.

Hike differentiates itself from other instant messaging apps such as Whatsapp or Nimbuzz by seamlessly integrating with SMS feature so that a user can easily chat with those that have not installed the app or do not have a smartphone.

With over 850 million mobile subscribers, India’s mobile population is one of the largest in the world. With falling SMS usage because of apps like Whatsapp, telecommunication companies have been looking for ways to retain the interest of younger subscribers who prefer that mode of communication to the earlier standard of SMS. Telcos have also been afraid of losing control to instant messaging apps who stand to gain as they generate revenues through advertising. An app like Hike from a telco stable, lets them remain in control.

Kavin Bharti Mittal graduated from Imperial College, London in 2009 with a masters in electrical and electronics engineering as well as management. He has also done short interships at Google and Goldman Sachs while studying at Imprerial College.

New app lets users have sex with Facebook friends

by vinayak mathur

FACEA controversial new sex app called “Bang With Friends” claims to facilitate sexual encounters with users and their Facebook friends without the embarrassment of rejection.

“Anonymously find friends who are down for the night,” the company website said.

“Your friends will never know you’re interested unless they are too!”

The Bang With Friends app, aimed at 20-somethings, was created by three “college-aged” men from California, who are withholding their identities, according to US media reports.

The app only alerts users of a potential hook-up if both parties express interest by selecting what is called the ” Down to Bang” button.

The creators of the app said it has already gained more than 30,000 users, registering five new users every minute according to a report on the online tech site Mashable.

Critics of “Bang With Friends” told RIA Novosti, putting the physical first is the reason for the demise of the majority of marriages and relationships in the US.

“Back in the days people would court, they would go out with different people without exploring the sexual relationship because it allowed you to get to know what you may or may not have in common,” said Kristen Crockett, a Washington-based relationship coach.

And while some who use the app may be more interested in sex than building a relationship, Crockett cautions users with the potential drawbacks of getting physical with a Facebook friend.

“Once you start sleeping with someone, your red flags, your fears, all of those things get pushed into the back of your mind,” she said.

She added that often people ignore signals and signs because of how the person makes them feel physically.

One of the app’s creators told The Daily Beast that the group came up with the idea as a way to improve traditional online dating sites like Match.com.

“It would be great, as guys, if you could find out which girls are actually into you and not dance around anything,” he said.

Skip the dating and jump straight to the sex, one of the creators said.

Crockett, who has authored several book on creating lasting relationships, met her current boyfriend of three years on eHarmony.com.

She said the couple spent several weeks emailing and talking on the phone before they met in person.

Crockett said she is a firm believer in using technology to cultivate a relationship, but this app goes about it the wrong way.

“I think the app contributes to people going into a relationship and actually dating backwards,” Crocket said.

“It’s the exception more than the rule that a relationship will last if it has begun with a physical encounter rather than emotional spark,” she added.

Currently the app only matches users of the opposite sex.

“Support for same-sex selections is already under development,” the app’s creators told Mashable.

Cellphone app Nirbhaya launched for women in distress

by vinayak mathur

woman-265__1946038063A software company of Pune has launched a cellphone application, which can send a distress message to a specified contact group in an emergency situation confronting a woman.

The application ‘Nirbhaya’, which can be downloaded for free, will send an alarm by way of an SMS text message denoting woman’s location to the configured group through the Global Positioning System ( GPS), said Gajanan Sakhare, the CEO of ‘Smart Cloud Infotech’, which has developed the application.

It can also be used for communicating exigencies like accident apart from attempted molestation through pre-defined text messages.

Compatible at present with Android mobile phones, the user will be required to submit personal details in respect of residential address and emergency contact numbers.

The users can configure their own list of contacts incorporating police and other close relatives and friends.

A click on ‘Nirbhaya’ short-cut hot key in a distress situation can deliver a text message to the configured contact group, seeking help and indicating the user’s location, he said, adding the application will soon be available on iPhone and Windows Phones.

Android Facebook new app

by vinayak mathur

Facebook has moved further away from HTML5 after releasing a native version of its Android app.

Facebook for Android version 2.0 has been built from scratch leveraging native Android controls, as compared to previous versions of the app which were built using HTML5.

While HTML5 offers cross-platform compatibility which means you can use the same code across various platforms like Android and iOS but its overall performance and integration cannot match that of apps using controls native to the platform.

Speed – more than anything else – is the reason Facebook switched from the old HTML5 iOS app to a new native app back in August. Now it has done the same on the Android platform. Facebook claims the new app “is twice as fast when looking at photos and opening your Timeline and noticeably quicker to launch”.

There’s further good news for developers. Facebook announced that Facebook SDK 3.0 for Android is out of beta. The new SDK makes it easier to build social Android apps by providing native UI controls for Facebook login, simplifying session management, and improving API support. Other native controls included in the API are Friend Picker, Places Picker and Profile Picture control. For full details of the new API visit the Android page on Facebook Developers portal.

Facebook has been talking about mobile as a key area of focus since its IPO earlier this year and native apps for the two major mobile platforms is definitely a step in the right direction.

Facebook Launches Job Listing App

by vinayak mathur

Facebook has launched a job-hunting app in hopes that its network of more than 1 billion users will help people find their next career opportunity.

The Social Jobs app announced on Wednesday is a result of Facebook’s year-old partnership with the U.S. Department of Labor, the National Association of Colleges and Employers, DirectEmployers Association, and the National Association of State Workforce Agencies. The app has job listings from other online job boards like BranchOut, DirectEmployers Association, Work4Labs, Jobvite and Monster.com. Right now, users can browse through more than 1.7 million openings. A ticker at the top of the app shows the exact number of available jobs.

So will a site typically considered a casual social network be useful for professional purposes? Facebook is a repository for users’ day-to-day activities, including updates that might be inappropriate if you’re using the site to look for a job. There have been cases where people have lost their jobsbecause of updates they posted on Facebook, and employers have gotten sued for asking for their employees’ Facebook passwords.

Sites like LinkedIn are built to cater to people’s professional identities, targeting very specific qualities — skills, past jobs, languages spoken, and more — that someone might want to highlight when searching for a job or presenting themselves to recruiters. Unlike LinkedIn, Facebook has a very hazy boundary between social and professional. But the Social Jobs partnership found in its research that Facebook is a useful site for both job hunters and recruiters. In a survey of 530 employers, the National Association of Colleges and Employers found that half of employers use Facebook in the hiring process, and more than half anticipate it becoming a more important tool for finding and recruiting talent. The vast majority said that Facebook helps decrease print advertising for job openings, and that the site can be used as a networking tool to get jobs.

That said, Facebook isn’t actually hosting the job listings. At launch, the app functions more as an aggregated search tool than anything else. Users can find jobs through the app, but once they try to learn more about a job, it points them to another app. The Work4Labs listings, for example, often links back to the hiring company’s Facebook page. If someone wanted to apply for the Head of Lighting position at Cirque Du Soleil, the new Social Jobs app would link to the Cirque Du Soleil hiring page on Facebook. The user would have to access the separate Work4Labs app if they wanted to see if anyone in their network could refer them. Should they want to apply, they would get pointed all the way back to Cirque Du Soleil’s official website.

It’s far from a seamless process, and there are several other glitches (Monster jobs showing up in the Work4Labs page, links going to a company’s Facebook Timeline, etc.). There is a lot of potential for Facebook to connect users to jobs — and create another source of revenue in the process. But in its current state, Facebook’s Social Jobs app is more of an extra side tool than an actual player in the job-hunting space.
