HP unveils Split x2 Windows 8 hybrid with 13.3-inch display

by vinayak mathur

hp_split_x2HP has unveiled Split x2 Windows 8 tablet/ laptop hybrid, similar to the HP Envy x2 introduced last year.

The Split x2 is an upgrade on the Envy x2 in many ways. Instead of the Atom processor, the x2 comes with an option of 3rd Generation Intel Core i3 or i5 processors. The 11.6-inch has become a 13.3-inch screen, though the resolution remains the same at 1366×768. HP Split x2 comes with up to 128GB SSD storage.

Also included are Beats Audio with dual-speakers, 8-megapixel rear shooter and a front camera with full-HD video recording capabilities, just like Envy x2. Disappointingly, the RAM stays the same at 2GB, though users have the option to upgrade. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but no NFC, which is present in the Envy x2.

Like the Envy x2, the Split x2 comes with a keyboard dock that includes a MicroSD reader, Combo audio jack, 1 USB 3.0 port, 1 USB 2.0 port, HDMI port and SD card slot. Interestingly, the dock also includes 500GB of hard disk storage, which makes it perfect for storing your media.

“Customers want to access and share content anywhere, anytime, on any internet connected device–and they expect those connections to be seamless,” said Ron Coughlin, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer PCs, HP. “The HP SlateBook x2 and the HP Split x2 are next-generation devices and the latest examples of our continued commitment to evolving the computing experience by providing the flexibility necessary for customers to be productive at home, at the office or on the go.”

The HP Split x2 will join the HP Envy x2 and the Android-based SlateBook x2 - announced alongside the HP Split x2 – as part of HP’s detachable PC portfolio.

Split x2 is expected to be available in the United States in August with a base price of $799.99. No word yet on India price and availability.

Talking about its smartphones, Joshi said: “We started with a consignment of 1,000 phones and we are getting very good response. Now we have placed orders for two more consignments from China.”

The company is selling the Croma smartphones priced between Rs 8,990 and Rs 10,990.

“Our idea is to add more smartphone models, which will be loaded with various features. The smartphones of the renowned brands are targetted at the upper segment of the society. However, the rest of people also have similar aspirations for good product and we will try to address that,” he said.

The company has also launched various types of washing machines under the Croma brand, he added.

Acer W3-810, first small-screen Windows 8 tablet, accidentally leaked by Amazon.com

by vinayak mathur

acer-Amazon_listingAccidental leaks seem to have become a common affair. The latest to suffer the fate is Acer with its W3-810 tablet, which is an 8.1-inch Windows 8 tablet.
According to a news report by PCWorld, Acer W3-810 was accidentally listed by Amazon.com on Friday for $379.99 (Rs. 20,500) but removed soon after.

Till date, most Windows 8 tablets that are available in the market have a 10-inch or larger display and this will be the first 8-inch offering based on Microsoft’s OS. There have been speculations in the past month regarding Acer working on an 8-inch tablet but this is the first real confirmation that this device exists and will be making its way to retail shelves soon.

As per the Amazon listing, Acer W3-810 is expected to come with the 1.8GHz dual-core Intel Atom Z2760 processor along with 2GB of RAM. The tablet will offer 32GB internal storage. For camera, there is a 2-megapixel rear and front camera.

From the specs, this 8.1-inch tablet looks much like the 10.1-inch Iconia W510. So far there is no word on when this tablet will be available in the market.

This tablet was earlier leaked by French website MiniMachines, which also posted purported pictures of the device. The leaked specs were pretty much in line with what was revealed in the Amazon.com listing.

The French website had reported about a possible launch in September, so an Amazon.com listing in May is a bit of an early surprise as far as this tablet is concerned.

Google Nexus 7 with 3G launched in India

by vinayak mathur

imagesTaiwanese manufacturer Asus has launched the 32GB variant of Google Nexus 7 tablet in India just a week after the search giant rolled out the 16GB iteration of the device in the country. This new version of the tablet comes in Wi-Fi as well as Wi-Fi+3G variants, whereas the model being sold via Google Play Store does not support mobile data.

Asus has priced the Wi-Fi-only variant of Nexus 7 at Rs 18,999, while the Wi-Fi+3G model costs Rs 21,999.

Manufactured by Asus, Google Nexus 7 features a 7-inch IPS screen. This tablet is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 1GB RAM and runs on Android 4.1, upgradable to Android 4.2. When it comes to connectivity, this tablet can access the internet only via Wi-Fi as well as cellular data (optional), while other data transfer options include Bluetooth, NFC and microUSB. Google Nexus 7 has no rear camera, while a 1.2MP camera is placed in the front.

Apple iPad mini with 16GB storage capacity and no 3G data compatibility costs Rs 21,990 in India. The 32GB iPad mini with Wi-Fi as well as mobile data is priced at Rs 35,900 in the country. Another Nexus 7 rival is Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, which has been unveiled in the country but is yet to hit the shelves. Its price is not known as of now.

Google to sell second-gen Nexus 7 tablet from July: sources

by vinayak mathur

google-nexus-7-04-03-13-01Google will launch a new version of its Nexus 7 tablet powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor around July, two sources told Reuters, as the software giant pushes deeper into the cut-price mobile hardware market.

Google is aiming to ship as many as eight million of the Asustek-made tablets in the second half of the year, throwing down the gauntlet to other low-end tablets such as Amazon Kindle Fire and Apple iPad mini, the sources with knowledge of the new product said.

This is the first time details about the timing and sales targets for Google’s new tablet have been unveiled, although the company has not publicly released any information.

Google, which gets almost all of its revenue from online advertising, wants the aggressively priced Nexus tablets to be a hit as more Nexus users would mean more exposure for Google’s ads.

The latest version will have a higher screen resolution, a thinner bezel design and adopt Qualcomm’s chip in place of Nvidia Tegra 3, which was used in the first Nexus 7s released last year, the sources said, declining to be identified because they are not authorised to speak to the media.

In a blow to Nvidia, Google weighed both US chipmakers’ processors but finally decided on Qualcomm’s for power reasons, one of the sources added.

Qualcomm and Nvidia are competing aggressively in the tablet market as they seek to expand from their traditional strongholds of cellphones and PCs respectively.

A Google spokesman declined to comment on its new tablet. Qualcomm and Nvidia also declined to respond to questions.

Google and other traditionally non-hardware companies like Amazon and Microsoft have begun making inroads into mobile devices as consumers increasingly access the web on the go.

Google introduced its first tablet last June, hoping to replicate its smartphone success in a hotly contested market now dominated by Kindle Fire and iPad.

The Nexus 7 joined the ranks of smaller, 7-inch tablets popularised by Amazon and Samsung Electronics, among others.

Pricing is yet to be determined and Google’s plans are fluid, the sources said. Market leader Apple is expected to launch new iPads this year as well, possibly forcing its competitors to change their assumptions.

Google may choose to sell the new gadget for $199, the same as the first generation rolled out last June, while the old model may be discounted, one of the sources said. Alternatively, the new tablet could be priced more competitively at $149 and the previous model discontinued, the source added.

The cheapest iPad mini goes for more than $300.

Core strengths

Though pricing has not been finalised, discounting could play to Google’s and Amazon’s strengths by getting cheaper hardware into more consumers’ hands to drive revenue from their core internet-based businesses.

“This is the ‘zero margin strategy’,” said Fubon Securities analyst Arthur Liao. “Ninety-seven percent of Google’s revenue comes from advertisement, so it needs to sell more mobile devices in order to reach more consumers.”

The internet search giant, which has never disclosed tablet sales, plans to ship six to eight million of the new Nexus 7s in the second half of this year, the sources said. That compares to an estimated 4.6 million Nexus 7s sold in the same period last year, according to Enders Analysis mobile industry analyst Benedict Evans.

The large volume could help to accelerate development of tablet-specific applications for its Android operating software.

Asustek, a netbook PC pioneer, will continue to co-brand with Google on the new Nexus 7. The Taiwanese company has said it aims to ship over 12 million tablets this year, almost double last year’s shipments.

Asustek could not be reached for comment.

iPad mini 2 coming in second half of 2013: Report

by vinayak mathur

images (1)Apple’s iPad mini with Retina display could be launched in the second half of 2013, a report has said. DisplaySearch analyst Paul Semenza told CNET that the Retina iPad mini would have a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels.

That’s the same as the resolution of the full-size iPad with Retina display, which, at 9.7 inches, has a pixel density of 264 ppi. Mashable reports. The Retina iPad mini, at 7.9 inches, will result in a higher pixel density of 324 ppi, the report said.

Earlier, reports have suggested that the iPad mini’s Retina display could cost as much as 12 pounds more than the current display, increasing Apple’s cost per unit to approximately 200 dollars.
