Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter apps announced for Google Glass

by vinayak mathur

glass_2565322bFacebook and Twitter have launched applications for Google glasses as developers rushed to learn more about tailoring software for the Internet-linked eyewear yet to hit the market.
“Built by Facebook, this app allows you to upload photos from Google Glass directly to your Facebook timeline,” Erick Tseng, head of mobile products at the social network, said in a message posted from the Google developers conference.

“You can also add an optional photo description, just by speaking it.”

Tseng’s Facebook page displayed an image evidently taken in a packed Glass session at the gathering and was tagged as the first public post to the social network using the application built for the eyewear.

“Can’t wait to start seeing Google Glass photos in my News Feed!” Tseng said.

Globally popular messaging service Twitter also introduced an application for Glass.

Twitter for Google Glass let people share pictures or text messages using the glasses, according to engineering manager Shiv Ramamurthi.

Ramamurthi demonstrated his point by tweeting an image from one of the array of sessions devoted to providing developers with insights and tools for making software for Glass. He gave the picture the hashtag #throughglass.

“In addition to sharing photos, you can also keep up with the people you follow on Twitter through notifications,” Ramamurthi said. “As always, you can reply to, retweet or favorite these Tweets.”

Several major news organizations have also tailored applications for Glass, which has only been made available to developers and a limited selection of “explorers” who paid $1,500 each for the eyewear.

Google Glass was a common sight at the California-based Internet giant’s annual developers conference, which continues here through Friday.

Software savants at the gathering shared visions of games, weather reports, news and more delivered to the Internet-linked eyewear.

Many of the 6,000 developers attending an annual Google I/O event in San Francisco sported Glass in what was unofficially deemed the largest ever gathering of Glass wearers.

Envisioned uses ranged from practical tasks such as shopping or delivering local weather reports to sharing real time video streams of riding cable cars or playing augmented reality games in which the world is the board.

Glass lets wearers take pictures, record video, send messages, or perform other tasks with touch controls or by speaking “Okay Glass” followed by a command.

Glass connects to the Internet using Wi-Fi hot spots or, more typically, by being wirelessly tethered to mobile phones. Pictures or video can be shared through the Google+ social network.

Google co-founder and chief Larry Page depicted Glass as part of an ongoing effort to get computers “out of the way” so people can focus on lives enriched by what the Internet has to offer.

“We want to make sure we are building experiences that make people really happy,” Page said while speaking about Glass.

“We are relying on you to make happy users,” he told developers at the conference. “Ultimately, I think a lot of your experiences will move to Glass.”

Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt said recently that it will take “a while” before consumer versions of Glass are available.

Mad Genius a Revolutionary Game Controller

by vinayak mathur

mad-genius-controller1Hardware gaming accessory company Mad Genius has created a new prototype game controller that looks very similar to the two-part DualShock 3 controller concept Sony showed off years ago.
The controller itself can break apart into two portions while playing a game, and doesn’t use accelerometers or cameras to track movements as done with other console controllers. And according to the creators, the splittable controller pieces can be as accurate as 1/100th of an inch on-screen to control characters, weapons, and even game menus. The controller can also be used on virtually any game console for nearly any game — even those that weren’t initially created with motion controls in mind. So basically, this could add a whole new level of game play to all the old titles that are currently collecting dust in your collection.
As you can see from the video demo below, you can control both your character and shoot a bow and arrow on the Xbox 360 version of Skyrim. Mad Genius controller is comprised from a modified Xbox gamepad. The final product, according to the company, meaning the wires that protrude from each portion of the controller will go away. The company is quick to note in the YouTube video description that neither the Xbox 360 or the copy of Skyrim (game being played) being played were modified in any way.
Mad Genius said it eventually plans on launching a Kickstarter campaign to get these controllers into production, but didn’t give an exact date on when that might be happening.

Google Glass specifications

by vinayak mathur

imagesGoogle Glass has been in the news ever since it was unveiled in June last year, but its specifications have been a mystery till now. Now, the search giant has broken the suspense over the hardware of its upcoming device.

The company has said that Google Glass will feature a high resolution display that renders images “equivalent to a 25-inch high definition screen from eight feet away.” For connectivity, the gadget will have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but no mobile data. The device also integrates a 5MP camera that can capture 720p videos.

Google Glass will also have 16GB flash memory, wherein 12GB is user-accessible; it will be synced with Google cloud storage. Buyers will be able to transfer data from Glass and charge it via microUSB. The company claims that this device will deliver battery life of one day, though actual life may vary as “some features, like Hangouts and video recording, are more battery intensive.”

Google Glass will transmit audio to users via bone conduction transducer and will be compatible with any Bluetooth-capable phone. This gadget will come with MyGlass app, downloadable from Google Play marketplace. The app runs on devices with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or later versions of the company’s mobile operating system and “enables GPS and SMS messaging.”

Previously, the internet search giant had revealed some of the features that Google Glass has, such as live video sharing, capture images and videos, online searches, translation etc. The product was unveiled at Google I/O in June last year and will soon start shipping to Explorers, people selected by the company to test it before its official launch.

Add touch to any PC with the Lenovo ThinkVision LT1423p touchscreen

by vinayak mathur

DSC09243_HDR-Edit-Edit-590x389If you’re not quite ready to shell out for a touch-capable rig just to take full advantage of Windows 8, you’re not alone. Lenovo’s solution may be exactly what you need, as long as you’re interested in adding another screen to your setup.

There are two very different worlds of Windows 8 use: those who use it with touch and those who use it without. Windows 8 can be used without your grimy fingers, in fact the shortcuts make it one of the most keyboard-friendly versions of Windows since 3.1… if you can manage to train yourself to use them. The ModernUI begs to be touched, and that can only be ignored for so long. If you’re not ready to go and replace your laptop or desktop monitor with something touch capable, Lenovo’s got your back with the ThinkVision LT1423p.

The Lenovo ThinkVision LT1423p is a touch monitor add-on that works with just about any computer, though the focus on Windows 8. Using a USB 3.0 connection, this 13.3-inch display adds exactly what you need to make Windows 8 more enjoyable. Every gesture from Windows 8 is accepted with this plug-and-play display, and the screen itself supports up to 10 fingers of multitouch. You can pick the screen up and use it like a tablet or set it on your desk to use as a secondary, touch-friendly monitor.

Lenovo’s design for this display allows you to position your new screen in several different ways. If you’ve got the desk real estate, the screen can lay tablet style on the desk, allowing you to use it like a giant touchpad. This method works especially well with the pen input, which allows you to take advantage of the handwriting recognition in Windows 8. There’s an adjustable wedge on the back of the display that allows you to control the angle, and an included tray that allows you to stand the display up at laptop viewing angles, where you can just reach out and interact with the screen.

If you set the ThinkVision up as a mirrored display, you’ll have a hard time noticing any lag between the two displays. As an extended monitor, Lenovo’s display can be used for all of your Start interactions, as well as allow you to interact with the pen whenever appropriate. It’s the best of both worlds, with the only possible hindrance being whether or not your computer has what it takes to drive the hardware without causing any performance issues.

The IPS display and Gorilla Glass face of the monitor look nice and work well on any desk.
Pricing isn’t cheap, but it’s not unreasonable either: $349 will get you the tethered model, with wireless version available for another $100. The Lenovo ThinkVision LT1423p is an inexpensive way to add interesting functionality to your current computer. It’s not going to be the best solution if portability is your goal, but the home office or workstation with Windows 8 would be well suited for this kind of add-on.

Solar-Lighted Umbrella

by vinayak mathur

SolarUmbrella-silho-brown_93138_600pxNow, the $149.95 Solar-Lighted Umbrella is definitely something that you might want to consider assuming you have a yard or garden large enough to fit it in. I guess it goes without saying that those who do not own landed property and are currently living in apartments, you can rule having the Solar-Lighted Umbrella around, since your balcony might not be large enough to accommodate it, either. It would be easy to assume that the Solar-Lighted Umbrella is pretty much self-explanatory, where it comes with integrated solar lights that help create a lovely mood and setting when dusk falls.

Sporting a large 9’ canopy that cranks open in a jiffy and speedily, the steel support pole is sturdy and stable, while 32 soothing LED lights will help light up your evenings when you want to have heart-to-heart talks with your beloved under romantic conditions, and just in case it has been cloudy the entire day, fret not, there is a battery backup to help recreate those magical moments. You can choose from black, brown, burgundy or hunter green colors for the Solar-Lighted Umbrella’s canopy.

Korg announces new KROSS keyboard

by vinayak mathur

When it comes to electronic keyboards, there are different brands to choose from, and korg-krossKorg has been an established name in this area for a long, long time already. Well, Korg’s latest addition to their electronic keyboard range has been called the Kross, where it is a mobile, affordable, keyboard workstation with audio/MIDI recording capabilities, and can operate on AC power or battery power (with the latter requiring half a dozen AA batteries to run), in addition to a vast selection of cutting-edge sounds. You will be able to choose from 61 keys or 88 fully-weighted keys, where it also holds the distinction of being the first battery-powered, full-featured Korg keyboard workstation.

It is said to feature rich sounds which are definitely top of its class, while carrying practical features such as analog-style step sequencing and built-in audio recorder, where all of those have been crammed into a lightweight and portable package. It seems that Korg is intend to hit the nail on the head this time around with the Kross offering specifications and style which will exceed people’s expectation of a keyboard at this price point.

Kross is said to come with roughly double the sound sample data compared to preceding Korg models such as the X50 and the PS60. You will find essential sounds like rock/jazz organ, strings, brass, and synth sounds in there, where they have been carefully treated to upgrades and enhancements, in addition to carrying instruments like the toy piano, accordion, combo organ, church organ, and of course, vintage instruments such as a tape sampler. Time to start composing a new set of your own tunes, no?

Those who are interested in picking up the Korg Kross keyboard workstation will be able to do so from this August onwards, where it will come with two price tags due to the different configuration. The 61-key Kross will retail for $699 a pop, while the 88-key model is more expensive at $999.

Iron Man suit for sale

by vinayak mathur

p5898_column_grid_12So you want to be a genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist, but lack the looks, smarts and money to play the role? Never mind then, you can always dress up in Tony Stark’s alter ego, the mechanized Iron Man who seems to be invincible when it comes to taking in all the heavy hittin’ from enemies, regardless of which dimension that they come from. In a nutshell, this Iron Man suit might just be the only weapon you will ever need, although it still puzzles me where does Tony Stark go when he wants to relieve himself in the midst of battle. This Iron Man suit will not come cheap either, as it carries a price tag of £250,000, which is a relative bargain when you compare to what it offers. I would dare say that a full fledged Iron Man suit packs far more firepower than a couple of F-35s, and yet to cost a mere drop in the ocean compared to those futuristic jet fighters? It is a steal.

Specially crafted from a mix of steel and carbon, it will also ensure that the iconic red/gold Iron Man colors are featured for easy identification. The Mark XLVII headset utilizes projected holographic technology, while the presence of hand-mounted stabilization jets ensures that you do not simply fall out from the sky. Those will work in tandem with the thigh-mounted flare development system, helping deliver optimum flight control, while there are cameras located on the shoulders as well as wrists for improved flight-safety.

All right, so it sounds so out of this world, that there might just be a sliver of truth to it, no? Unfortunately, our dear readers, this Iron Man suit that you have just read about is as real as Tony Stark himself – both of them do not exist in our reality other than being a figment of our overactive imagination. Imagine how many of such suits would the rich of the world purchase if it were to be true!
